30 Day Challenge: Day 3

Day 3: Favorite Quote

Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try.
-Yoda (Empire Strikes Back)

I know you were probably expecting me to wax philosophical and quote some old philosopher or world leader, but then you also probably forgot that this is the blog of a Nerd. Just because I'm quoting a fictional character does not mean that it's can't have a profound philosophy behind it. It's always been my opinion that if you are going to put forth the effort to do something, then you should put your whole self into doing it. It's the whole positive thinking aspect. Saying "you'll try" is just a cop-out for future failure. The body goes where the mind tells it. Master Yoda did not get to the head of the Jedi Council by trying...so why should you?

30 Day Challenge: Day 2

Day 2: YOUR JOB

IT Support
Lamar University
Beaumont, Texas

I stated at Lamar in 1998 as a Student Worker in Media Services located in the Mary and John Gray Library. This is where the main computer lab for the campus is located. I would re-fill printers, clear print jams, help studets use the software, do minor fixes (mostly removing floppy disk door slides from the drives). I was hired on as a full time staff member in January of 2000. Eventually I became the Lab Manager and was responsible for the roughly 90 computers in the lab, roughly 50 laser printers, and another 60 or so staff machines throughout the library. In 2003 I transferred to the Microcomputer Support and Services shop. This was the department that was reposible for pretty much any electronic device on campus that plugged in...roughly 6000 computers. We did it all, new system installs, reapairs, software, virus removal, email, managment, etc. In 2009 I was transferred (kicking and screaming) to the Customer Support and Services Service Desk. I was initially brought in as an IT consultant to assist in trying to resolve work orders at the call center level. But eventually I would end up answering calls, creating tickets, resetting passwords, etc...pretty much everything associated with computers except actually fixing them. In 2011, my director corrected this travesty (thank you Gee) and transferred me back to the library where I'm basically doing what I started at Lamar doing while also doing limited Service Desk stuff as well. Who knows where I'll be transferred to next (my coice would be IT Security Services) but as long as it's not on the grounds-crew, I'll be happy.

30 Day Challenge: Day 1

As I've said before, I'm a Nerd. I'm 41. Male. I work for a Texas State University as an IT Professional. Computers are my bread and butter. I'm into Comics (more Marvel than DC), but I'll read almost anything. I love Sci-Fi. I'm a huge Star Wars nerd. ESB is the greatest movie ever made. Period! I love games. Card Games, Table Top Games, Board Games, Miniture Games, Pen and Paper Games, Video Games, whatever, I'll play it. I'll get into specifics with another post. I love football (real football, not that soccer bullshit). Colege more than Pro's...but I love both. The Hurricanes are my college Team, the Cowboys are my Pro team. I was born in Dallas County, Dallas, Texas. If there is a greater state than Texas, I've yet to hear about it. I live with my girl-friend. She is quite possibly the perfect woman for me. Seriously. If I went to one of those computer match making services, the computer would say we matched 100%. She is Lisa to my Gary/Wyatt. I'm going to try to do the 30 day challenge for blogging. This concludes day 1. I'll see ya'll tomorrow.
